For Immediate Release
September 21, 2019
After months of relentless campaigning, Washington-based Let People Vote (LPV) successfully reversed the legislative passage of Initiative 1000 (I-1000), an unconstitutional and illegal measure that would restore Washington’s divisive, race-based affirmative action policies. As a result, Referendum Measure 88 (R-88) will appear in the state’s November ballot as a successor to I-1000, giving Washington voters a fair opportunity to vote for their equal rights.
The Asian American Coalition for Education (AACE) strongly opposes R-88’s attempt to restore race-based college admissions in Washington State. It violates a succession of federal laws and U.S. Supreme Court rulings, in addition to Washington laws and the voter-approved I-200. To guard against encroaching anti-Asian discrimination in public education and employment, we are working closely with the LPV and other partners in Washington to defeat R-88 in the upcoming November ballot.
It is time that we unite to defend our children’s equal education rights in Washington State. Once codified, the measure will set a corrosive precedent for a wave of legislative and bureaucratic attacks on equal treatment and civil rights in places like California, Florida, Michigan, Arizona and Oklahoma, among others.
Henceforth, we call upon AACE’s supporters and concerned citizens nationwide to support the campaign against R-88. You can contribute in several important ways:
- If you live in Washington State, please join the LPV campaign, call upon your neighbors, friends, and your association members to vote on November 5 to reject R-88 and I-1000.
- If you live outside Washington State, please donate to the Let People Vote PAC. Mobilized by courageous Asian-American community leaders, the LPV has made concrete efforts in spearheading this important fight. They need our support!

For Asian-American children’s equal education rights, please help. We count on your valuable support!

About the AACE: www.asianamericanforeducation.org
The Asian American Coalition for Education (AACE) is a non-political, nonprofit, grassroots national organization, the proven leader in fighting for Asian-American children’s equal educational rights. On May 15, 2015, the founders of AACE united 64 Asian-American organizations and jointly filed a civil rights complaint with the Department of Education (DOE) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to request that they conduct investigations into Harvard University’s discriminatory admissions practices against Asian-American applicants. As the largest joint action taken by Asian-American communities over the last few decades, this complaint is now being investigated by the Justice Department. Over the years, we have advanced the cause of equal education rights for the Asian-American community.
