Asian-American Coalition for Education (AACE) is the proven leader in fighting for Asian-American children’s equal education rights. Its journey started in later 2014 when its founders decided to unite Asian-American communities to speak out against Ivy Leagues schools’ discriminatory college admission practices against Asian-American children.
On May 15, 2015, the founders of AACE united 64 Chinese-American, Indian-American, Korean-American, Pakistani-American and other Asian-American organizations and jointly filed a civil rights violation complaint with the Department of Education and Department of Justice to request that they conduct an investigation into Harvard University’s discriminatory admissions practices against Asian-American applicants. As the largest joint action taken by Asian-American communities over the last few decades, after the complaint was filed, it immediately caught enormous media attention and attracted the support from many parts of American society, including bipartisan support of the U.S. House of Representatives. It has been a historic event.
With this great start, AACE has overcome many challenges and continues our endeavor to pursue equal education rights for Asian-American children:
In response to a call from AACE, more discriminated-against Asian-American families started speaking out. On July 20, 2015 and on September 3, 2015 respectively, two Asian-American families filed individual administrative complaints with Office for Civil Rights, Department of Education against Ivy Leagues schools for their unfair rejection of their children.
On September 10, 2015, representing 117 Asian-American organizations, AACE and Asian American Legal Foundation jointly filed an Amicus Brief with the U.S. Supreme Court urging a total ban of racial discrimination in college admissions. This document is filed in support of the petitioner in Fisher v. University of Texas.
Though AACE and other supporting Asian-American organizations have made tireless efforts to fight for our children’s equal education rights, most of American top universities have not changed their discriminatory practices against Asian-American applicants. It is imperative for us to continue our endeavor in pursuit of equal education rights for our children and children of all Americans.
By uniting Asian-American communities, AACE will use the following democratic approaches to advance our cause:
1. Launch media campaigns and conduct community outreach to increase public awareness
2. File administrative complaints or take legal actions against universities that discriminate against Asian-American applicants;
3. Encourage and support discriminated-against Asian-American students to file complaints or take legal actions;
4. Advocate for legislative changes in favor of equal education opportunities;
5. File position papers on relevant policy and legal issues;
6. Contribute to the process to improving education in disadvantaged communities.
AACE’s Ongoing and Next Step Actions:
1. Encourage Asian-American students who were unfairly rejected by top American universities to file complaint with the Department of Education (if the rejection happened within last 180 days) or the Department of Justice (if the rejection happened earlier than last 180 days)
2. Plan to file an administrative complaint against other Ivy League schools regarding their discriminatory admissions practices against Asian-American Applicants.
